The school board in the Stewartville School District has voted to make hot lunches available to all students even if they can’t pay for it, but there’s still a push at the State Capitol to make state law more explicit. It comes after reports that the Stewartville district told lunchroom workers to throw a student’s hot lunch into the garbage and give them a sandwich instead, if payment on their lunch account was overdue. Republican State Representative Sarah Anderson says lawmakers passed legislation specifically stating that schools not demean students because their school lunch balance has run empty, and Anderson says she’ll consider withholding funds from school districts that don’t comply. Democratic Governor Mark Dayton also strongly criticized the practice, but wouldn’t comment whether he’d support sanctions against districts.
