Republican Senate leaders are pushing for a vote this week on their health care bill to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Democratic U-S Senator Al Franken says hurrying the bill through would be a mistake. He says “Mitch McConnel wants to have a vote on it. This is not the way to do these things. This kind of bill is way too complicated, you need to amend the bill and go through the regular order where people are talking about what works and what doesn’t work.” The bill would end ACA penalties for people who don’t buy insurance and decrease an expansion of Medicaid. President Trump on Sunday blamed Democrats for not cooperating with the GOP on the bill. But he says lawmakers are not far off from replacing “the dead carcass of Obamacare.” Franken strongly opposes the GOP plan and says “I certainly don’t want to see a repeal of the ACA, which has been working. There have been a couple areas, the individual market, pharmaceutical drug prices that have to be addressed…” So far, several Republicans have come out against the bill as its written and it’s not clear if the GOP has enough votes to get the bill passed.
