State Senator Dave Tomassoni’s struggle with A-L-S did not prevent him from being at the State Capitol when Governor Tim Walz signed a bill Wednesday designating 20 million dollars for research on that disease, which at this point is always fatal. Tomassoni with assistance of a computer said,
“Caregivers get some badly-needed support also, as being a caregiver is a 24-hour job.”
A-L-S, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, has not squelched Tomassoni’s celebrated wry wit. The Chisholm independent drew laughter and applause when he told the audience that after his diagnosis the governor and legislative leaders said they’d support whatever he wanted and “maybe I should have asked for more.”
Lawmakers are lauding Tomassoni for his bravery and efforts to benefit future generations. He said,
“This is about making the future better. We can all be proud of that. This is truly a good day.”
