Leaders say Minnesota Senate Democrats are “receptive” to Governor Mark Dayton’s request for a special session to extend unemployment benefits for hundreds of steelworkers on Minnesota’s Iron Range. House Speaker, Republican Kurt Daudt (DOWT), hasn’t commented publicly so far. Senate Democratic leaders also suggest the special session address Minnesota’s compliance with federal REAL ID, but Governor Dayton contends that’s probably not necessary. The governor has asked the federal government for an extension so Minnesota drivers licenses don’t become invalid for boarding flights, and says he believes they will give Minnesota enough time to deal with it during the regular session which begins in early March. The governor says he wants to assure Minnesotans there will be no interruption in their ability to board an airport or enter a federal building.
