Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman today announced criminal sexual conduct charges against singer-musician R Kelly involving an underage girl in Minneapolis. The charges involve two counts: one for engaging in prostitution with an individual under 18 years of age, and one for hiring or offering to hire for sexual purposes a person under 18. Freeman says the charges stem from an incident in July 2001. Freeman says the victim was under 18 at the time and was trying to get an autograph from R Kelly when he gave the girl his phone number. The girl later met with Kelly at the singer’s Minneapolis hotel room and she was offered $200 to undress and dance for him. She complied. In a press conference this afternoon, Freeman said “we have special laws to protect our juveniles and we are going to enforce them. ” Freeman says his office learned about the case from a tip line centered out of Chicago. R Kelly is currently in custody in New York facing federal charges for sexually exploiting young women.
