Voters in today’s primary election choose which Democrat of six running for U-S House will be on the ballot this fall in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District (Minneapolis and near suburbs). Hamline University Professor David Schultz says Margaret Anderson Kelliher and Ilhan Omar are the leading candidates — and a key factor is that the 5th District includes not only the city of Minneapolis but also several inner-ring suburbs. Schultz says, “If the turnout is more heavily in Minneapolis, [it] probably favors Representative Omar. If it’s more heavily I would say in the suburbs, probably Margaret Anderson Kelliher.”
Schultz says all the major candidates are not that far apart on the issues, so the winner will be determined by name recognition and voter turnout. The 5th Congressional District is heavily Democratic and the winner of today’s primary election will likely be the next U-S House member from that area.
