The fatal shooting of two police officers in Des Moines, Iowa is in sharp focus as hundreds are expected tonight for a previously planned “Blue Mass” at the Cathedral of Saint Paul. Chaplain Rip Riordan says the purpose is to gather together in prayer and “share our love for those who serve us, and ask God to protect those who serve us.” Riordan says events in Des Moines are hard on the entire community “and it’s also especially hard when those that are called to protect us, their lives are taken.” Archbishop Bernard Hebda will celebrate the Blue Mass and thank law enforcement officers, first responders and their families for their sacrifice.
