Hundreds of people are at Split Rock Lighthouse on Minnesota’s North Shore to mark the 40th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The 729-foot ore carrier went to the bottom of the big lake during a November gale and all 29 crewmembers perished. Split Rock’s Lee Radzak says over a thousand people have lost their lives in over 350 shipwrecks on Lake Superior. He says, “As long as people are going out onto that water, there’s potential for it happening again…. I think the Fitzgerald’s just one that really stands out in that line of events.” At sunset the beacon on Split Rock Lighthouse will be lit and a bell will ring 29 times as the names of the dead are read.
