St. Cloud area recount upholds new GOP majority in Minnesota Senate

December 7, 2016 By Bill Werner

It appears Minnesota Senate Republicans will hold onto the majority they narrowly grabbed from Democrats in the November election — that after a just-finished recount confirmed Jerry Relph as the winner in District 14 in the Saint Cloud area. The recount showed Relph leading Democratic challenger Dan Wolgamott by 141 votes, down seven votes from the original tally. Incoming Majority Leader Paul Gazelka says, “Now that the recounts are complete and the final numbers are in, Senate Republicans are ready to focus on the important work of addressing the healthcare crisis and growing jobs in Minnesota.” The election gave Republicans 34 seats in the Minnesota Senate to Democrats’ 33. Democrat Wolgamott’s attorney says he expects his client will make a statement on his intentions by the end of the week. The results are not official until the State Canvassing Board certifies them.
