A 26-year-old St. Paul mother pleaded guilty this morning to drowning her six-year-old daughter on December 23rd, 2014. Kayla Jones had been civilly committed as “mentally ill and dangerous” in April 2015 and has been held at the St. Peter Security Hospital since then. As part of her plea agreement, Jones withdrew a plea of “not guilty by reason of mental illness” and will serve a nearly 17-year sentence, with credit for time served at St. Peter’s correctional facility. Final sentencing details are pending a judge’s ruling. That is set for June 22nd.
