Saint Paul public school teachers say they’re still waiting for a response from the district to a scaled-back contract proposal offered late last night, even as teachers wrap up their first day on the picket lines in the Capital City. The union says the district’s last proposal dramatically slashed the number of support staff. Saint Paul Superintendent Paul Gothard says students need and deserve additional support, but the district must prioritize spending because it has limited resources. He says the district did all it could to avoid a walkout, which he termed avoidable and unnecessary.
