A state commission has voted to reduce sentences for some non-violent drug offenses. Lars Negstad with the group ISAIAH supports it, saying Minnesota has some of the harshest drug sentencing guidelines in the country. He says it’s fueling one of the fastest-growing prison populations in the U-S and a “prison overcrowding crisis” in Minnesota. But Robert Small with the Minnesota County Attorneys Association warns lowering drug sentences sends “the wrong message to people that are involved in the trade.” The legislature can override the decision but it’s unclear whether lawmakers would take up such a controversial issue in an election year.
