State health officials say the number of new H-I-V diagnoses in Minnesota have remained relatively stable over the last decade, but the goal is to get that number down. The Health Department’s Krissie Guerard says it’s possible because “for the first time we actually have the tools we need to end the HIV epidemic in Minnesota, as well as the country.” Guerard says early, sustained treatment and prevention drugs are helping in the fight against H-I-V. And she says “we’ve actually maintained the number of new diagnoses in Minnesota over the last decade, with around 300 cases each year, however, we’d like to see that number go down.” Guerard says disparities remain: men who have sex with men have higher rates of H-I-V. And about half of all new H-I-V cases last year were in communities of color. Guerard recommends that anyone aged 13-64 should be tested for HIV at least once.
