State Health School league approves 3 contingency plans for winter sports start-up

December 3, 2020 By Bill Werner

The state High School League has approved three potential start dates for winter high school sports — as early as December 21st, as late as January 18th, or an intermediate start date of January 4th. It depends on whether Governor Tim Walz extends a four-week “pause” beyond December 18th — and Walz said Thursday the decision hasn’t been made yet. “As I have from the beginning of this, I’ll accept full responsibility for the decisions we make, but those decisions are being predicated on what state we are in the virus — so at this point in time I cannot yet tell,” the governor said.

State High School League spokesman John Millea says, “I think we got a good chance at having state tournaments for winter sports here. The board talked about that and they… built in time on these calendars…. Now, they’re probably not gonna be anything [like] what we’re used to.”
