A state House committee this afternoon holds its first hearing on Racial Justice. Committee Chair Representative Rena Moran of St. Paul says one goal today is for lawmakers to learn more about the definition of racism. Moran says she’s under no illusion it will be easy but says “what we do know is this is a much-needed dialogue, and I think it’s a much-needed dialogue with legislators in the state of Minnesota since in the state of Minnesota we have some of the worst disparities within all of our systems.” Moran says “it’s really the introduction on a very hard subject area to talk about out loud to help, hopefully, members become more comfortable with the subject area.” Lawmakers are set to get a presentation called “what is racism” led by Dr. Camara Jones and a presentation from Dr. Rachel Hardeman on maternal-child health mortality and morbidity.
