State House GOP unveils $50 million school safety plan

March 29, 2018 By Scott Peterson

State House Republicans today unveiled their $50 million package of bills to improve student safety statewide. Education Chair Jenifer Loon of Eden Prairie says “we are here for our children, for all of Minnesota’s children, it is our top priority and I think this package will go a long way to making sure that we are doing everything we can to keep our children safe.” Loon says the plan includes funding for school security upgrades and “support services for students to make sure that students aren’t falling through the cracks.” Specifically, the package focuses on funding to hire more school resource officers, counselors and mental health professionals. And it would provide grants for school building security upgrades. Minority House Leader Melissa Hortman says Republicans are “doing nothing on gun violence prevention.”
