State lawmakers hold hearing tonight in Hibbing on improving child care access

October 8, 2018 By Bill Werner

State lawmakers tour two daycare facilities this afternoon in Hibbing, then take public input tonight (6pm) at Hibbing Community College on how to improve child care access in Minnesota. D-F-L Senator Dave Tomassoni from Chisholm says some of the problem is funding, but part of it is “overzealous enforcement of regulations.”   Tomassoni says lawmakers “want to make sure that the people who are private individuals who have been providing child care for a long time and haven’t had any complaints from parents… are not gonna leave the business because somebody came in and said there’s some dust in a corner or something to that effect.”

The state Senate’s Child Care Working Group has been traveling around Minnesota in preparation for the 2019 legislative session which begins in early January.
