State lawmakers introduce bill to eliminate statute of limitations on violent sex crimes

March 8, 2018 By Scott Peterson

A bill introduced today at the State Capitol would eliminate the statute of limitations on sexually violent crimes. Representative Ilhan Omar of Minneapolis says with the momentum of the #MeToo movement and more victims feeling more empowered to share their stories and “having these kinds of limitations takes away the choice for them to come forward when they feel it is right for them.”   Survivor Asmah Mohammed says the law as it is now protects perpetrators of sexual violence and she’s calling on “the esteemed members of the House and Senate to stand with survivors and to stop protecting perpetrators who hurt young boys, girls, women, men in our state. This is not a partisan issue, we all know someone who has suffered.” If the bill is passed and signed into law, it would apply to acts of sexual violence and sex trafficking committed on or after August 1st this year.
