Pointed questions about civil rights and data privacy at today’s State Capitol hearing on body cameras and automated license plate readers. Republican Representative Peggy Scott from Andover indicated at least one law enforcement agency has officers using Smartphone cameras. Scott says, “I would think that it would be really easy to download any video from that onto another– to their own personal device. I just see a lot of issues with that.”
Burnsville Police Chief Eric Gieseke says his department doesn’t use Smartphones that way but “I think it’s a legitimate concern to have and it’s a very good question to ask.” Police officer and Senator Dan Schoen from Saint Paul Park says information is sent to a secure server and is not immediately available to officers.
