State public safety officials unveil the new design this afternoon for Minnesota drivers licenses and I-D cards. They say the new look includes vertical and horizontal I-D designs plus State of Minnesota branding. The state will issue cards in the new design for applications or renewals processed after August 6th. You do *not* have to get a new license unless your current one is expiring or your address or name is changing. And the new license designs are *not* REAL IDs that will be required under federal law. Officials say Minnesotans will be able to apply for REAL ID compliant drivers licenses or ID cards beginning in October, but will have two years to obtain one if they choose.
