State Representative Nick Zerwas from Elk River will be present by invitation of the White House when President Trump today signs a “Right to Try” bill into law. It’s similar to a 2015 Minnesota law Zerwas sponsored, which allows terminally ill patients to try experimental treatments that haven’t received full F-D-A approval. He says, “I’m just so grateful for our leaders within Minnesota, like Congressman Tom Emmer and Representative Jason Lewis, who have worked so hard to make sure that the good work we did in Minnesota was replicated at the federal level.”
Zerwas was born with a serious heart defect and wasn’t expected to live past age seven, but had experimental surgery in 1988. He says, “As I’m about to turn 38 years old this winter, I know that the last 30 years of my life are because of that ability to try something that hadn’t been proven, but my parents wanted to give us a shot.”
