Reach out to all parts of the community to improve relations with the police — that’s advice to Minneapolis Mayor-elect Jacob Frey from veteran state Senator Jeff Hayden. Hayden says, “Have to be a bottom-up approach to this issue, and often you have to talk to the people that aren’t the ones that are politically saavy or astute. You gotta often talk to people that are on the street, and you gotta develop a plan.”
Hayden argues better police accountability is only half of the solution: The other part is citizens not getting themselves in situations where they’re subject to arrest.
