Strong feelings on both sides in MN about Romney “guilty” vote in President Trump’s impeachment trial

February 5, 2020 By Bill Werner

The U-S Senate acquitted President Trump on both impeachment articles this afternoon and Minnesotans on both sides of the political aisle are talking about Utah senator and former presidential candidate Mitt Romney, the sole Republican who voted “guilty” on the “abuse of power” charge. Romney told his colleagues on the Senate floor, “My promise before God to apply impartial justice required that I put my personal feelings and political biases aside.”

Minnesota Senator, Democrat Tina Smith, says Romney’s speech brought tears to her eyes. “I think we need more ethical leaders like Mitt Romney,” Smith says. “Even though he’s not in my party, I think we need more ethical leaders like Mitt Romney in Washington.”

The president’s eldest son, Donald Trump Junior, tweeted that Romney is forever bitter that he will never be president and “he was too weak to beat the Democrats then, so he’s joining them now.”
