About two thousand students walked out of class and a crowd estimated at five thousand converged on the State Capitol this afternoon, demanding lawmakers change Minnesota’s gun laws. Taylor, a student at the Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Arts says, “I just want them to know that we don’t feel safe in our schools or in our environment. It’s just not right for us to feel like we could be killed at any second.” Bridget, a student at Saint Paul Central High School says, “We want more restrictions on gun control and ban possibly assault rifles, because I personally don’t believe that anyone needs one, so I think it’s really important that we have less guns in our country.”
Students threw snowballs at a lone gun-rights advocate perched on a snowbank who said, “They’re allowed to have their own opinion. I don’t agree with it, but obviously they have more people than I do.”
The student march comes the same day as Governor Mark Dayton unveiled his school safety proposal.
