Surly Brewing Company has agreed to pay 140 bartenders and servers about two-and-a-half million dollars to settle a class-action lawsuit alleging the Minneapolis-based brewery illegally mandated tip-pooling and fired some who objected. The Star Tribune quotes plaintiffs’ attorney Steve Andrew Smith who says they believe it’s the largest tip-pooling settlement in Minnesota history. Surly says it set up tip-pooling with good intentions and to be fair to all employees, but has replaced it with a traditional system.
