Suspect who shot at Eden Prairie officer charged

A 28-year-old Minneapolis man who fired at an Eden Prairie officer after fleeing a crime scene has been charged. Derrick Smith is accused of leading police on a car chase after a shooting in Prior Lake last Wednesday morning. The victim in the shooting later died. According to the criminal complaint, Smith got out of his car after a chase and fired at one of the pursuing officers. The officer returned fire, hitting Smith. The complaint says Smith pointed his gun at the officer again and the officer shot Smith a second time. Smith was then taken into custody. Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman says Smith is a key suspect in the Prior Lake killing, and is also a person of interest in a Milwaukee, Wisconsin murder. He is due to make is first court appearance today.
