A task force commissioned by Governor Mark Dayton proposes stakeholders work out a compromise, after a recent Minnesota Supreme Court decision limiting fees that local governments can charge for new home developments. Opponents say the fees drive up home prices and Minnesota Housing Commissioner Mary Tingerthal acknowledges they’re “indeed a challenge for development.” But Tingerthal says on the other side, “We heard from cities and communities that those revenues from the fees are really important for things like roads and parks and inclusionary housing.”
The task force proposes a non-partisan group discuss where changes can be made. Tingerthal says there’s “clearly some room for middle ground there, and I really hope that there will be a sincere attempt to bring parties to the table and try to find that middle ground.”
