Tentative settlement reached in Jamar Clark police shooting lawsuit

August 8, 2019 By Bill Werner

The family of Jamar Clark — the man shot by Minneapolis police in 2015 — has reached a tentative 200-thousand-dollar settlement with the City of Minneapolis, reports the Star Tribune. Analysts say approval by the Minneapolis City Council isn’t guaranteed. They rejected an earlier five-figure offer as too low and are likely to discuss the new proposal in a closed session later this month (8/23). Activists have demanded the city pay the Clark family 20 million dollars — the same amount agreed on in the fatal police shooting of Justine Ruszczyk Damond.

The attorney representing Clark’s father says the family is satisfied with the 200-thousand-dollar settlement and what they really wanted was accountability — not money — but “came to understand that systemic changes to police training weren’t possible through the courts.”
