A 42-year-old Watertown man is facing criminal vehicular operation charges after striking and killing his girlfriend Tuesday night. According to the Carver County Sheriff’s Office, 33-year-old Jessica Ludenia of Watertown was found unresponsive in the roadway and suffered traumatic injuries. She was transported to a Waconia hospital where she died. The BCA was called in to help process the scene, the incident remains under investigation.
The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a suspicious device at a mobile home park and the Bloomington Bomb Squad has been called in. Officials have blocked off the entrance to Bel Clare Acres and are asking everyone to stay away from the area. It’s unclear what led to the discovery of the item and whether it is dangerous.
Three suspects have been charged for the fatal hit and run of an Andover teen. 17-year-old Daveion Maddox and 16-year-old Jaden Meadows are each charged with aiding and abetting murder. The alleged driver of the car, 19-year-old Loren Gafner, is charged with criminal vehicular homicide in the November 10th death of 17-year-old Tristan Robinson. According to the charges, the three suspects met with Robinson intending to rob him during a drug deal. Robinson was killed when the teens fled, striking and dragging him with their vehicle. Anoka County prosecutors have filed petitions to have the juvenile suspects certified as adults.
Officials have identified a New Hope officer involved in a fatal shooting in Crystal Friday. Officer Ben Harty shot and killed 62-year-old Ronald Klitzka after Klitzka fired a weapon at officers in his home. Officers had been responding to reports of a suicidal man. Harty is on paid administrative leave. He has served as a peace officer for close to nine years. The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.
Preliminary tests show that seven deer harvested in southeastern Minnesota’s disease management zone may be infected with Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). Hunters harvested three of the seven suspect deer near Preston, where 11 other deer tested positive during last year’s C-W-D surveillance efforts. Three others were harvested in Forestville-Mystery Cave State Park. The remaining deer was harvested east of Wykoff. Once all sampling is completed, the DNR will determine next steps.
The last of three men has pleaded guilty in a credit card skimming scheme. 20-year-old Roilan Garriga admitted to felony identity theft Tuesday afternoon. Last week, his two accomplices also pleaded guilty to the same charges. The men admitted to planning a trip from Florida to Minnesota for the sole purpose of stealing credit cards. They said they installed the skimmers at several gas stations and after stealing identities, they went on shopping sprees in the Twin Cities with the forged credit cards.
The fugitive father of a three-year-old boy who shot and wounded himself Monday in St. Cloud has been arrested in Montana. The Star Tribune reports that the 28-year-old suspect is being held pending charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and negligent storage of a firearm. The boy is in stable condition.
More than 91,000 Minnesotans have enrolled for private healthcare coverage through MNsure since open enrollment began on November 1st. CEO Allison O’Toole says the first two weeks have gone smoothly, with average call wait times at around one second. The enrollment period ends January 14th.
Minnesota fell short in its bid to host the World Expo in 2023. Argentina was selected today as the host country of the event, also beating out Poland. It has been more than 30 years since North America has hosted either a World Fair or World Expo. Officials say the three-month event is expected to draw more than 10 million visitors.
