In an unprecedented move, a Minnesota House committee this morning holds a hearing inside Stillwater State Prison — prompted by last year’s murder of Corrections Officer Joseph Gomm. Lawmakers will hear from the warden, representatives of the guards, inmates’ representatives and the state corrections commissioner. Back at the Capitol it’s Opioid Awareness Day with a rally in the Rotunda and a push for licensing fees on drug manufacturers and distributors. There are hearings on several bills to tighten Minnesota laws on sexual assault and harassment. One of House Democrats’ high priorities — paid family and medical leave — has a hearing in a key committee. And there’s also discussion of a bill that would automatically register a person to vote when they apply for a drivers license. Currently a person must specifically request it.
