Senator Amy Klobuchar’s comment that she’s thinking about running for president has received a lot of attention in Minnesota — but Hamline University analyst David Schultz says compared to big names like Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden and maybe Elizabeth Warren, Klobuchar is still a second- or third-tier candidate. He says, “Recent appearances at the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings for Brett Kavanaugh or on ABC recently help that a little bit, but she really has to figure out how to raise her profile — and do that pretty rapidly.” Schultz says to be viable in the Iowa caucuses in January 2020, a person probably needs to be a declared candidate six months before that.
Schultz contends Klobuchar will face significant challenges if she decides to run because she doesn’t come from a big East or West Coast state — and he says another important task for Klobuchar is “trying to figure out where the center, I guess, of the Democratic Party is right now, and that’s her challenge. She’s gonna be competing against a lot of other people.”
