Some pundits predict chaos one week from today (1/6/21) when Congress meets to certify Electoral College votes in the presidential election. But Hamline University analyst David Schultz puts little stock in that prediction. He says, “In order for the challenge to be affirmed, there has to be a majority vote by both the Senate and by the House of Representatives — and… the House is not going to vote to overturn any of the electoral votes.”
Schultz says in the Republican-controlled U-S Senate, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has put enormous pressure on fellow Republicans *not* to challenge the Electoral College results. Schultz says McConnell is worried such talk could sway two runoff elections in Georgia on January 5th, which will determine who controls the U-S Senate. And he says McConnell is also concerned that, if Republicans put up a fight they’ll ultimately lose, it will hurt them politically.
