A top political analyst predicts House Republicans’ proposal to eliminate statewide property taxes on cabins will go nowhere, despite pressure from people who own recreational property. Hamline University Professor David Schultz says there will be strong opposition from local officials across Minnesota, “who have been basically able to balance their budgets by shifting a lot of the property taxes away from their own residential property to tourists and second [home] owners.” Backers of the plan say cabin owners are not opposed to paying property taxes — they just don’t want to pay an unfair share.
