Hamline University analyst David Schultz says about Republicans asking a judge to order Governor Mark Dayton to restore the legislature’s funding that he vetoed: “I think at this point the Republicans are looking to squeeze the Supreme Court to actually force them to decide this case, and they think in a way that will favor them.” A Ramsey County judge ruled in Republicans’ favor but the Supreme Court sided with Governor Dayton. And although the high court ordered the two sides into mediation — which was unsuccessful — it has not made any rulings beyond that. Schultz guesses the justices don’t want to decide a sticky constitutional question and are hoping the legislature can get by on its existing funds until they go back into session in February — when they could override Dayton’s vetoes and restore their own funding.
