Top analyst says state auditor’s challenge of new Minnesota law may be about politics

State Auditor Rebecca Otto

State Auditor Rebecca Otto’s legal challenge to a new state law that allows counties to outsource their audits might be more than an argument about the Minnesota Constitution, says a top political analyst. Hamline University political science Professor David Schultz says rumors have surfaced that Otto might consider running for governor — and some have speculated that the goal of the legislation she’s challenging was to derail her possible bid for the state’s top office. Schultz adds the lawsuit Otto filed against the state could end up going all the way to the Minnesota Supreme Court. Otto contends she’s upholding her oath to defend the state Constitution. Republicans say she’s wasting taxpayers’ money.
