Top Minnesota Democrats — including Governor Tim Walz — say police reform legislation he signed into law Thursday is a good start. Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman says, “This legislation is long overdue, and yet not enough.” Hortman says the statute of limitations must be changed to give families hurt by police brutality their day in court.
Hortman says she was “really surprised” and heartened by Republican leaders’ openness to discuss it during negotiations. “We didn’t get there yet,” she says, “but that doesn’t mean that progress isn’t still possible this year.”
