An influential state lawmaker says Republicans are “on board” if Democratic Governor Tim Walz proposes real tax cuts, but he’ll face strong opposition on any tax hikes. Tax Committee Chair, Lino Lakes Senator Roger Chamberlain says unless the state does something to reduce the tax burden on workers, families and businesses, Minnesota will suffer economically. “And if you pile on that weather we’ve had the last few days — this is national news, this weather — this is not gonna invite people to this state,” Chamberlain says. “So you better not be stealing more of their money.”
Governor Walz hinted Wednesday he might propose reductions to individual income taxes, but wouldn’t say whether business taxes would then have to increase. Walz is pushing for a gas tax increase, which Republicans strongly oppose.
