Top MN analyst says U-S/Iran war not likely

January 7, 2020 By Bill Werner

A top analyst says war will probably *not* be the result of the volatile situation after a U-S drone strike killed a key general from Iran. Carleton College analyst Steve Schier says politically it’s difficult for the U-S to go to war, and Iran is in very bad shape diplomatically and economically. He says, “What we’re in for I think are a series of responses back and forth between the U-S and Iran, without an escalation to full-scale war.” Schier predicts any retaliation by Iran will be against American troops, contractors or installations in the Middle East.

President Trump tweeted that if Iran retaliates for the killing of one of its top generals, the U-S will hit back “very fast and very hard” — but Schier says, “The president has been known to storm rhetorically on Twitter and in extemporaneous remarks in the past, and then act in a different fashion — and I think that may happen in this case.”
