Mesabi Metallics C-E-O Gary Heasley will participate as Governor Mark Dayton and other top officials update Nashwauk residents tonight (7pm) on efforts to reopen the bankrupt Essar Steel plant. Dayton said after a meeting with Heasley two weeks ago, “[It’s] imperative that we get this project to succeed… whatever twists and turns and ups-and-downs, this project’s gotta get through to the finish line and then begin to produce pellets and jobs.” Dayton said Mesabi Metallics indicated they’re spending 30 to 40 million dollars on engineering this year and hope to begin reconstruction of the plant next March.
The project has been on-again, off-again for years. State Senator Dave Tomassoni from Chisholm said, “We been working on it for a long time and, boy, hopefully this is the one.” C-E-O Heasley said earlier, “Mesabi Metallics remains the only entity that can move this mine project forward.”
