The Supreme Court is allowing President Trump’s temporary ban on some travelers and refugees from certain majority Muslim countries. Hamline University political expert David Schultz says it’s a big victory for the president, and says he was surprised by the court’s decision adding that “many of us thought that the law was pretty clear in terms of the limits being placed on presidential authority in terms of singling people out based on their religion, especially in the way that his statements repeatedly seemed to describe how this was a Muslim travel ban.” Schultz says “whether or not the court eventually rules in his favor we don’t know, but generally when courts lift stays like this, it is an indication that perhaps the prevailing party in having the stay lifted will eventually win.” The Supreme Court is set to hear arguments on the travel ban in October when the next term begins. Trump has called the court’s decision to allow the ban a victory for national security.
