The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have acquired utility player Tristan Gray from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for minor league catcher Nate Baez.
Gray, 29, hit .231 (18-for-78) with five doubles, three home runs, nine RBI, six walks and nine runs scored in 30 games for Tampa Bay last season. He spent most of the 2025 season with Chicago-AL’s Triple-A Charlotte club, hitting .270 (67-for-248) with 15 doubles, four triples, nine home runs, 44 RBI, 24 walks, 40 runs scored and an .805 OPS. The Houston, Texas native was acquired by Boston from Tampa Bay last November and has hit .207 (23-for-111) with six doubles, four home runs, 10 RBI, nine walks, 10 runs scored and a .634 OPS in 47 career major league games with the Rays (2023, ’25), Miami Marlins (2024) and Athletics (2024). Gray has played in 13 career major league games at first base, 12 games at second base, 10 games at shortstop and 12 games at third base.
Baez, 24, was originally selected by the Twins in the 12th round of the 2022 First-Year Player Draft out of Arizona State University and has hit .263 (206-for-782) with 39 doubles, six triples, 25 home runs, 115 RBI, 108 walks, 121 runs scored and a .788 OPS in parts of four seasons in Minnesota’s minor league system, advancing as high as Double-A.
To make room for Gray on the 40-man roster, the Twins have designated infielder Vidal Bruján for release or assignment. Bruján was claimed off waivers from Atlanta on January 14.
