(San Diego, CA) — San Diego catcher Austin Hedges’ home run in the eighth inning capped a 3-0 win for the Padres against the Minnesota Twins last night at Petco Park. Jhoulys Chacin improved to 11-and-7 with seven shutout innings. Chaska native Brad Hand closed it out for his seventh save. It was the opener of a two-game series. Jose Berrios (buh-REE-ose) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but came away with the loss anyway. Berrios gave up one run on two hits in seven frames to put him at 9-and-5. Minnesota has lost seven-of-eight. The two teams play this afternoon at 2:40 P-M. The Twins activated outfielder Byron Buxton from the 10-day disabled list prior to last night’s game. He was out 14 games with a left groin strain.
The Twins also called up pitcher Dillon Gee from Triple-A Rochester. They took the roster spots of Brandon Kintzler and Jaime Garcia, who were both traded earlier this week.
