Twins make roster moves in wake of Correa’s COVID diagnosis

May 31, 2022 By Minnesota News Network

The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have placed shortstop Carlos Correa on the COVID Injured List.

Correa has played in 35 games for the Twins this season, hitting .279 (39-for-140) with nine doubles, three home runs, 16 RBI, 13 walks, 17 runs scored, a .344 on-base percentage and a .751 OPS. This is his second stint on an Injured List this season, after missing 11 games at the beginning of May while on the 10-day Injured List with a right middle finger contusion.

To replace Correa on the 26-man roster, the Twins have selected the contract of infielder Jermaine Palacios from Triple-A St. Paul. Palacios, 25, hit .262 (39-for-149) with eight doubles, three home runs, 17 RBI, 14 walks, 25 runs scored, a .325 on-base percentage and a .701 OPS in 39 games for the Saints this season. He will wear uniform number 87 and make his major league debut in the first game of today’s doubleheader against the Tigers.

Additionally, right-handed pitcher Cole Sands has been appointed as the 27th man for today’s doubleheader in Detroit and will make his first career major league start in Game 2. Sands, who will be making his fourth stint with the Twins this season, recently made one appearance with Triple-A St. Paul on May 24 vs. Indianapolis, pitching 3.0 shutout innings with one hit allowed, one walk and three strikeouts. The 24-year-old made his major league debut on May 1 at Tampa Bay and has appeared in two games for the Twins this season, allowing three runs on four hits in 4.0 innings pitched, with no walks and six strikeouts.
