The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have recalled right-handed pitcher Louie Varland from Triple-A St. Paul.
Varland, who will be making his sixth stint with the Twins this season, has gone 5-8 with a 4.75 ERA (83.1 IP, 44 ER), 32 walks and 96 strikeouts in 17 games (16 starts) for the Saints this season, including a record of 3-2 with a 2.01 ERA (40.1 IP, 9 ER) and a .193 opponent batting average in his last eight games (7 starts) for St. Paul since June 29. In eight games (7 starts) for the Twins this season, Varland has gone 0-5 with a 6.14 ERA (36.2 IP, 25 ER), 11 walks and 32 strikeouts.
To make room for Varland on the 26-man roster, the Twins have optioned right-handed pitcher Diego Castillo to St. Paul. Castillo, who had his contract selected by Minnesota on Sunday, made one appearance during his most recent stint, pitching 1.0 scoreless inning with one strikeout last night at Tampa Bay.
