Two Minnesota lawmakers have key role in House-Senate negotiations on Farm Bill

Two Minnesota lawmakers — Democratic Congressmen Collin Peterson and Tim Walz — have been named to the conference committee that will try to hammer out differences between the House and Senate versions of the new federal Farm Bill.  One major point of contention is that the House bill would impose strict new work requirements on able-bodied adults seeking food stamps, while the Senate said “no” to that. Congressman Peterson says those provisions in the bill “are mostly to hassle people that are on SNAP” — the federal Food Stamp program. But House Agriculture Committee Chairman, Texas Republican Michael Conaway, says it’s bad politics in an election year to oppose changes to move people into the work force. Some worry the fight over food stamps could torpedo a new Farm Bill.
