Younger people don’t make phone calls much; but they do text message. That’s why a new kind of crisis line saw so much response in a test program in the Duluth region that it has expanded statewide. Txt4Life (text for life) connects people with trained crisis counselors using cell phone text messaging. Before opening it up to texts, counselors were responding to between five and 25 calls a month. Txt4Life spokeswoman Meghann Levitt says since the service expanded statewide, they are getting closer to a thousand text messages per month.
