U-S Steel says it will lay off up to 40 non-union workers at its Minntac and Keetac taconite plants. The Star Tribune reports it comes a week after the company posted disappointing third quarter results, and three weeks after U-S Steel idled a production line in Mountain Iron. Executives say the layoffs are necessary to make the organization leaner and more efficient at a time of “challenging market conditions.”
