Governor Tim Walz says he does *not* plan to do what fellow Democratic Governor Tony Evers did in neighboring Wisconsin: call the legislature into special session without prior agreement on passing controversial anti-gun-violence measures. Walz says, “I’ve received little indication that there’s much appetite in the Republican Senate to do anything on that, so at this point in time I don’t think calling a special session would move us any further along — but it’s our intent certainly to continue to ask to come together on this.”

Walz and Evers are both pushing in their respective states for universal background checks on gun purchases and a “red flag” law to take guns away from those who are a danger to themselves or others. Republicans respond background checks don’t reduce mass shootings and “red flag” laws violate a person’s civil rights. They say they’re willing to consider other measures if they’re proven to reduce gun violence.
