United States Attorney for Minnesota Erica MacDonald is going after landlords taking advantage of tenants during the COVID-19 pandemic. MacDonald says “we’re seeing reports nationally about landlords who’ve responded to this pandemic by requesting sexual favors or other acts of unwelcome sexual conduct in exchange for rent abatement or similar types of concessions.” MacDonald calls the behavior “despicable conduct” and says it’s illegal under the Fair Housing Act, which prohibits discrimination in housing on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, familial status, national origin and disability. MacDonald says the Minnesota Attorney General’s office is working with her office to prosecute these cases. Anyone who has been victimized by a landlord is urged to call the U-S Attorney at 612-664-5600 or email fairhousing@usdoj.gov. Here’s more with the U-S Attorney.
