US Forest Service “deeply concerned” about proposed Twin Metals mine

June 14, 2016 By Bill Werner

The U-S Forest Service says it’s “deeply concerned” about two leases for the proposed Twin Metals mine near Ely as it gets ready to open a 30-day public comment period June 20th.  The Forest Service cites “inherent risks associated with potential copper, nickel and other sulfide mining operations” within the watershed of the B-W-C-A Wilderness, adding “those risks exist during all phases of mine development, implementation and long-term closure and remediation.” Eighth District Congressman Rick Nolan says “now is not the time to pre-emptively block new mining opportunities on the Range.” Nolan adds the Forest Service has “all but decided to disapprove the leases” even before the public comment period begins.
